MY FIRST TOOTH
We have a new single out – you can listen and download it here:
We recently caught up with Explorers from the UK and this is what they have to say. BTW we fell in love with their music instantly, and we’re sure you will to.
1. What’s the name of your band? what’s the origin of that name? have you changed the band’s name before?
explorers (on some sites we are listed as the explorers)
we chose this name as we where both big fans of the Joe Dante’s 80′s kids film of the same name growing up, this and many 80′s teen films inspire us when writing, we always aim to try to produce some of that nostalgia that inspired us to start making music !
2. What genre of music do you consider your work to be? who are your major influences?
to most people we probably would fit in the bracket of synth pop, but we always refer to ourselves as a band so it’s a mash up of new wave, indie synth, disco pop, experimental, although when writing we always just go with what makes us get excited!
3. How long have you all known each other? how did you meet?
we both met at college doing a media course and found we had similar tastes in music, film and humour. we were working on a few sound bites and starting mixing our samples with beats and thats how it all started! we have known each other for around 12 years?
4. Do you have a record label?
No, we release everything ourselves under our made up label name ‘islandearth’ but it would be nice to work with a label that has a similar vision to us and to release our music to a wider audience.
5. What are your favorite and least favorite venues? do you have any upcoming shows?
So far we have not played live at this stage, although we are hoping to start booking some shows later this year. we have live experience from previous bands so we are confident we can deliver our sound with the full power it deserves!
6. What has been your biggest challenge as a band? have you been able to overcome that challenge? if so, how?
The biggest challenge has been to get heard, as most bands starting out will face the same problem, it’s tough but you hope the music will be good enough for people to spread the word. as there are only 2 of us we have day jobs and spend many nights sending songs to various blogs/zines as well as putting any spare bits of cash into promoting so we do work quite hard at it but it’s all worth it when you get people from all over the world listening and commenting on our songs, if our music can bring people some joy it’s amazing inspiration for us and a great feeling!
7. What’s your favorite thing to do before a show ?
It would probably be to chill with some sailor jerrys and coke!
8. How long are your rehearsals ?
We combine rehearsals with recording and writing so every Tuesday and some Sunday evenings roughly about 6-8 hours a week!
9. How has your music evolved since you first began playing music together?
It has changed more in the way that we feel like we now have a sound that is us, an ‘explorers’ sound, so when you hear one of our songs it is us!! i think before we were too influenced by other other music, you’d hear an amazing acoustic track and that would inspire to you create an acoustic song, dance a dance song, but if you’re too inspired by others i think you can risk losing your own sound. now we’re really comfortable with the writing process, we’re the most inspired and love recording more than ever!
10. What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?
From our experience with other bands, you should form a band to enjoy music not to chase a record deal or for the money as it will quickly go stale and you will probably find that you do better and go further not chasing fame and just enjoy what you are doing!
11. Do you have girlfriends?
One half of the band is spoken for!, all interested parties should call 07………..!
12. Anything else you would like to add.
If you have read this far, thanks for sticking around with us and please lend your ears to our songs and share them around!
we’re releasing a lot more stuff soon, with some new singles and our new ep is being released later in the year!

INDIE POP GROUP “FEMKE” TALKS TO MIAMI SWAMP
1. What/where is your hometown? Do the people back at home support you?
My Hometown is Drachten, in Holland, they do support me and love what I do, however it’s such a small town, you can walk in and out of it in a second
so there are not too many people there.
2. How does it feel to be in a professionally signed band?
Feels awesome, I love how my music job allows me to be as creative as possible, and work with all these amazingly talented people. I’ts a blessing to be part of this company and living in Nashville is also amazing.
3. Bands love to talk about their influences, who do you idolize, ( or ) look up to ( would sound better ) and why ?
I am a huge fan of Paul McCartney and Paul Simon, I love Paul Simon’s Graceland album and in general I love how he uses world music in his own music. That has always stimulated me to look outside of the box and make something that doesn’t sound generic.
4. If you guys were to describe yourself in simple word choice.. what would you say?
I would call myself Indie Pop…..My band is only a drummer, a DJ and me, we all play a bunch of different instruments and switch them back and forth on stage. It’s a fun show to look at because you never know who will play what in the songs.
5. What’s your all time favorite song ?
Oh, that is a hard question…..I have no idea…I love Halleluya by Leonard Cohen but at the same time you can find me jamming on the Divine Fits or Foo Fighters….I’ll probably cry with records from Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell and dance around the room on Katy Perry and some old Backstreet Boys tracks…
6. What were the first things you did as a band ?
Rehearse our little asses off, we practiced for weeks to get it all worked out with tracks and instruments. I produced the whole record myself and played all the parts myself, so for the other musicians to learn the parts took a few weeks.
7. What did you have to do when you had no cash as a starting band ?
That is why I produced it all myself, when you can’t afford a studio, you just do it all on your own computer.
8. Do you feel you have achieved some of your earlier goals as a band, and are their new ones ?
Totally, we had a great show, I play solo a lot, I love the record, but the big goal is to go on tour and eventually…. world domination???
